What Is The Paradise Garage? from gogoPatience c+p on Vimeo.

This video is just amazing! The Paradise Garage was around before I was born so there was no way possible I could have experienced it first hand. I would love to have. I hear stories like the ones in the video and I just keep thinking to myself with the way club culture is in the United States, why can’t there be another one of these? To kind of give you an idea of the impact that this club had on people’s lives. The club has been closed for a while. Over 20,000 people turned out to celebrate a closed club and its DJ, Larry Levan. People got tattoos of  the logo of The Garage. The big thing to take away from this video is that they got quotes from attendees of the event and all they talk about is just the love the felt when they experienced this place. It’s kind of powerful.

Paradise Garage may have closed in September of 1987, but the legacy it left behind spans generations. On May 11, 2014, a block party was held in front of the club’s former home in SoHo. The street was spilling over as thousands paid their respects to the Garage and legendary DJ Larry Levan. During its ten years, the Garage defined what dance music has become today, and one man’s musical style and taste provided the soundtrack to an era. See why millions of fans around the globe have a special place in their hearts for Larry Levan and the Paradise Garage.
