A good friend of mine, KJ Kearney is celebrating his incorporation of his non-profit by holding a fundraiser at Sneaker in downtown Charleston this weekend. If you are unfamiliar with H1GER LEARNING, it’s something that you really should get on board with. Where a lot of non-profits hold these over the top galas or 5k runs or whatever to raise money, KJ does something different. His organization helps out at risk students by rewarding them with a new pair of top notch sneakers. If you are unfamiliar or have forgotten how important it is to have a fresh pair of sneakers when you were in elementary and middle school, let me remind you… IT’S DAMN IMPORTANT!!!! It’s almost life or death important. (I know trivial to us adults, but to kids, it’s everything.) Being an at risk student, most of the time, the child is in a pretty bad situation. Kid lives in a poor neighborhood. Kid comes from a poor socioeconomic – broken home, etc. The child just doesn’t have a way to be able to be rewarded with something that is over the top spectacular to them. That’s where H1GHER LEARNING comes in. For children in those bad situations and make leaps to turn their lives around, make better grades and better choices, KJ comes in and rewards them with some fly treads. It’s brilliant! Anyway, enough of me talking. Here’s all the info!

Oh, and if you ever want to make a child grin from ear to ear, tell them they’ve got, “Cool shoes!” They totally love it.

On Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning at 7 pm until 10 pm, H1GHER LEARNING will be celebrating its incorporation as a non-profit organization at Sneaker.

Since January, H1GHER LEARNING has provided over 100 pairs of brand new sneakers to at-risk students for their academic success. For H1GHER LEARNING, sneakers are the bait to get these children too evolved into better students in the classroom and stewards of their respective communities.

And in an effort to secure the last remaining funds needed to file for the organization’s Federal tax exemption (501c3 status), H1GHER LEARNING will be releasing a very limited amount of custom New Era 9FIFTY snapbacks.

The snapbacks feature both a black crown and visor and displays the full H1GHER LEARNING logo in raised white and gold embroidery on its front. A white New Era flag is present on the left side of the cap; there is also a granite snap enclosure, and dark green under visor round out the details of this special edition headwear. Only twenty five of these caps will be available and they will be sold on a first come, first serve basis.

The “PEP RALLY” is a free, all-ages event.

Sneaker is located at 237 King Street in the business district of Downtown Charleston. For more information, contact Tawana Tolbert at 843.367.3294, or visit
