One thing that I really, really, really, wish is that I had the opportunity to experience the Paradise Garage in the late 70’s through the 80’s. From all that I’ve read, all the pictures I’ve seen, all the people that were interviewed that attended, and the music played by Larry Levan. God the music! (Speaking of which, did you know they had a block party in New York City recently celebrating the Paradise Garage and over 20,000 people showed up! I wrote a quick little piece on it a few months back.)
Change’s music was always a staple in Larry Levan’s magical sets. With so many great songs spanned over the course of six albums and five years, I wonder how he chose to play what he did when it came to Change’s work. However, one song that I kept hearing and seeing popping up in the Paradise Garage’s playlist was their 1981 single “Paradise” off their full length album “Miracles.”
“Paradise” was definitely the crowning achievement on this album. However, for some odd reason, didn’t do to well on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. I’m not 100% sure as to why. It’s an incredible song. The single did great on the Hot Dance Club Play and the Hot R&B/Hip Hop charts. Placing 1st and 7th respectively. “Paradise” alongside “Hold Tight” and “Heaven of My Life” make up the meat and potatoes of this album. Those tracks are just great disco-y, soulful goodness, that fill you up, but will always leave you wanting more and more of that early 80’s disco flavor. Phenomenal tracks! However, if you want to give your ears a bit of a surprise, tune in on the title track “Miracles” and the third track of the A-side “Your Move” to hear some of that Luther Vandross. Over all you definitely want to have this album in your collection as it features timeless disco tracks at their very best. However, the 12″ single for “Paradise” definitely seems to be more of the collector’s item due to it fetching more money on the Discogs marketplace than the album. Definitely get your hands on it!
